Practice Policies
To promote clarity and trust with the people I serve as a writing coach and editor, I offer the following basic information about my practice. Additional information about my background and practice is available on my website at www.larrycnichols.com.
If you are a new client, please download this document, read it carefully, and bring a signed copy to our first meeting. If this information raises unanswered questions for you, please bring them to our first meeting, so we can resolve them before you sign.
Services
Coaching sessions include clarifying our agenda, working through it as much as possible, discussing what we accomplished and what will be done before the next meeting, and scheduling that meeting.
Besides coaching, I also offer developmental, substantive, and copy editing. For a more detailed description of my particular coaching and editing services, see the Services page of my website.
Also, please note that, although I always intend to offer positive and useful comments, the author decides how to make use of my suggestions.
Scheduling
Normally, coaching sessions are scheduled for an hour and a half and include time for payment and scheduling future sessions. If you know you will need to alter our regular meeting time, please let me know as soon as possible. I will do the same.
Before I begin your editing project, we will agree on a schedule for completing the work.
Fees
My fees vary depending on the nature and length of the project and, in the case of editing, how quickly the work must be completed.
Introduction Process
If you are considering working with me as your writing coach, please email me to set up a brief complementary phone consultation. During that time, you can let me know more about your needs and expectations for coaching and the kind of project you are working on.
Unless otherwise agreed upon, for new editing projects, please send me your complete text (preferred) or a 3-5 page sample of the piece you would like edited. I will then offer a brief, sample edit to show you the kind of editing I offer and
to establish a rate for the project.
Payment
I work on a current basis, which means that unless otherwise agreed upon, I require in-person clients to pay at the time of service, including for the cost of
the session and for any editing or substantial preparation beforehand. For online coaching, clients send payment at the conclusion of each individual session.
For online editing projects, the client and I will negotiate terms of payment.
Cancellations
If you need to cancel a scheduled coaching appointment, please call me as soon as possible. I charge for missed coaching appointments and for cancellations not made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.
If you are more than 15 minutes late for your session, and have not phoned to notify me that you will be late, I will assume you have cancelled without notice and will bill you for an hour’s time.
Returning Loaned Books
To support your work, I will sometimes lend books from my library. Unless we have agreed otherwise, please return any borrowed books by the next time we meet.
Our Agreement
My goal is to become the kind of well-informed, helpful, and personable consultant you recommend to all your colleagues and friends. To help me achieve that goal, please ask for what you need and seek clarification about any aspect of our working relationship.
