Professional Summary
For over forty years I have developed strategies to help individuals create meaningful, clear, and compelling writing. As a writing coach and editor, I offer my experience and expertise to private clients working on academic, creative, or workplace writing projects.
Private Editor and Writing Consultant
2012-present
As an editor, I collaborate with individuals and organizations to transform their drafts into clear, concise, and compelling finished writing. As a consultant, I help individuals complete writing projects as they also develop the capacity to write more easily and effectively.
Governmental agencies with a project drafted by multiple authors employ me to edit their draft into one clear, cohesive, and readable document. In this capacity I have recently edited local plans for 3 Rivers Workforce Investment Board and South Central Pennsylvania Works.
University faculty hire me to edit their drafts so that careful readers can more easily understand their arguments and journal reviewers will welcome their articles for publication. In this capacity, I have worked with articles from business, chemistry, economics, education, English, organizational development, and public policy, as well as editing an academic book on Chinese history.
Undergraduate and graduate students seek me out for coaching and editing to help them create compelling personal statements for scholarship applications or admissions to graduate or law school.
Creative non-fiction and fiction writers engage my coaching and editing services to help them transform their early drafts into work they will feel proud to publish.

College and University Writing Instructor
1971-2015
During my academic career, I have taught most writing courses offered on American college and university campuses, including all levels of composition, as well as creative writing, and business and technical writing. However, individual conferencing, with its emphasis on coaching and editing, has always been central to my pedagogy. Creative nonfiction and other uses of narrative are my main areas of interest and expertise.
Seattle University Writing Center Director
1993-2015
Providing individual hour-long appointments, the Seattle University Writing Center offers about 2600 consultations each year, typically including students who represent over 35 different native languages. As its director, I have taught and mentored over 200 undergraduate writing consultants, helping them learn to inform and inspire writers across a diverse range of background, ability, need, and motivation.
Workshop Facilitator
1976-2015
Offering experiential writing workshops has been another central aspect of my professional life. That work first involved creating private journal writing workshops that combine meditation and reflective writing.
As a writing center director, I have collaboratively designed and presented numerous workshops to help faculty and departments improve their use of writing to foster and assess deep learning. I have also helped organize and carry out numerous local gatherings and regional conferences for writing center professionals.
Writer
As well as being a dedicated journal writer and occasional poet, I have enjoyed success with academic and workplace writing, creative nonfiction, and playwriting.
