Background
Over thirty-five years of college and university teaching, I have helped thousands of students learn to write well. As Director of the Seattle University Writing Center for the last seventeen years, I have managed a service that provides extensive and ongoing individual assistance to undergraduate and graduate writers from such diverse areas as business, chemistry, English, history, philosophy, engineering, theology, and nursing. Beyond my own consulting with students and faculty during this time, I have hired, trained, and supervised some two hundred writing consultants who in any given year offer some twenty-five hundred hours of writing consultation to writers representing over thirty different native languages.I have taught most types of writing courses offered on American college and university campuses, including all levels of composition, creative writing, and business and technical writing.
I have also designed and lead numerous academic success workshops incorporating information about learning styles, time management, academic reading, and test-taking. Creating, promoting, and facilitating private workshops that combine journal writing with meditation has been another essential element of my teaching history.
As a writer, I enjoy effective workplace writing, creative nonfiction, and playwriting, but am most dedicated to journal writing and poetry.
